Rowing Center at Chickahominy
The Williamsburg Boat Club (WBC) is a community rowing organization catering to rowers of all ages and abilities, ranging from 11 to 80+. Currently working with JCC Parks & Recreation, WBC is actively involved in the development of a Rowing Center at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. This multi-year project aims to enhance non-motorized boating access, providing improved facilities, including waterfront and handicap access, boat storage, indoor spaces, and enhanced traffic access and parking. The Phase 1 development, starting in the fall, focuses on restroom additions, relocating RV storage, and repurposing an existing storage facility for indoor training, coaching, and learn-to-row programs, with a fundraising goal of $50,000.
WBC emphasizes the importance of the Rowing Center in expanding outreach to young athletes, offering scholarships, building leadership and fitness, adding community programs, preserving outstanding coaching, and developing adaptive rowing capabilities. The comprehensive plan involves several phases, including sheltered storage, regatta equipment, improved water access, and ADA-compliant facilities. The projected cost for the entire Rowing Center is $500,000+, with funding expected from foundation grants, corporate sponsors, and community donations. The Rowing Center is positioned as a pivotal initiative to promote clean, recreational use of the water venue, making rowing accessible to a wider audience and positioning the area as a regional rowing destination. Corporate sponsorships, team-building events, and tourism benefits are outlined as opportunities for supporting the Rowing Center's construction. The appeal concludes with a call for donations to make rowing more accessible and to support the growth of WBC's programs and community impact.
