Youth Rowing

CLUB AND PERFORMANCE YOUTH ROWING

Williamsburg Boat Club’s Youth Program is regionally recognized as an inclusive, competitive, and accomplished rowing community. Our athletes compete locally, regionally, and nationally in both sweep (one oar) and sculling (two oars). Many go on to row at top Division I, II, and III colleges and universities.

WBC's Youth Program is open to 8th–12th grade athletes and is offered in seasonal sessions throughout the year. Athletes can participate in one season or multiple seasons based on their schedule and goals, with opportunities for both new rowers and experienced competitors to grow, train, and race.

Training by Season

Fall & Spring: After-school practices with weekend regatta opportunities
Summer: Morning practices focused on skill development and fitness gains
Winter: Indoor training emphasizing strength, technique, and team bonding

Team Options

WBC offers both Performance and Club options for youth athletes.

Club Team: The perfect place to start rowing. Welcoming to new athletes and open to all experience levels. Rowers build strong fundamentals, fitness, and confidence while enjoying the camaraderie of being part of a team.

1607 strength & conditioning is encouraged, but optional.

Performance Team: Designed for athletes committed to high-level training and competition, with an emphasis on speed, technique, and strength. Athletes compete at regional and national regattas and may pursue collegiate rowing opportunities.

Eligibility requirement: Athletes must complete at least one season on the Club Team before joining the Performance Team. More than 3 unexcused absences may result in placement on the Club Team.
1607 strength & conditioning is required.

One Team Culture

While training paths differ, athletes practice alongside each other regularly and share the same supportive, unified team environment.

We welcome 8th-12th grade athletes year-round. No prior rowing experience is required.

**Scholarships are available for families with demonstrated financial need. See the Scholarships page for more information.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING with Crossfit 1607

WBC partners with CrossFit 1607 to complement the water and land training we do at the boathouse. Developing body awareness, coordination, mobility, flexibility, and strength is an important part of athletic development, improved performance on the water, and injury prevention. WBC coaches collaborate with the 1607 coaching staff to create a comprehensive training program that supports rowers at every level. We strongly encourage athletes to participate.

CrossFit 1607 strength and conditioning is required for Performance athletes and recommended for Club athletes.
